PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic compound that exhibits a black color and is colorless without having an absorption band when discolored, and to provide an electrochromic composition including the electrochromic compound coupled or adsorbed to a conductive or semiconductive nanostructure, and a display element having high white reflectance and high contrast or a dimming element having high transmittance and high contrast, using the electrochromic compound or the electrochromic composition.SOLUTION: The electrochromic compound has a pyrimidine scaffold and contains a pyridinium salt structure in the molecule, and for example, the compound is represented by structural formula (19) below.
