A plastics article has an electrolessly deposited metal coating thereon, optionally also an electroplated coating, the plastics material having a first constituent which is an ABS inter- or graft polymer, an AS or AB copolymer, or a blend thereof, a polyether, a (meth)acrylate polymer, a polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyester, polycarbonate, polysulphone, polyolefin, polyamide, or a cellulose ester, and a second constituent which is at least one basic-nitrogen-containing polymer, the constituents either being blended together or the material being in the form of an interpolymer or graft polymer of the constituents. In the examples, the following polymers are prepared: (1) styrene/acrylonitrile/2- vinyl pyridine terpolymer by emulsion polymerization, and (12) and (13) styrene/aorylonitrile/2-vinylpyridine grafted on to a polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer base using an emulsion or bead polymerization. The following polymers are blended and used for electroless plating:-(a) not containing basic nitrogen-polystyrene, acrylonitrile/styrene/ABS graft polymer, ABS polymer, styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer, polyvinyl chloride, polyoxy methylenes, cellulose acetate butyrate, and a polysulphone, and (b) containing basic nitrogen - polyvinyl pyridine, styrene/2 vinylpyridine (2VP) copolymer, styrene/acrylonitrile/2VP terpolymer, 2VP-ABS graft polymer, 2-methyl-5- vinyl pyridine (15-vinyl picoline)/2VP copolymer, a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer treated with dimethylamino-propylamine, and acrylonitrile/styrene/2VP grafted on to polybutadiene or butadiene styrene copolymer. In Example 16 some of the latter polymers are used alone for electroless plating. A pigment and a lubricant are also included in the blends.</p> |
