A positive electrode active material for lithium ion secondary batteries, which is a mixture of particles that are defined by a particle size distribution (D10) of 4-10 μm and a particle size distribution (D50) of 11-30 μm, and which is a lithium-containing metal oxide that is represented by general formula (1): LixMyPaSizO4 (wherein M includes at least Fe or Mn, 0 < x ≤ 2, 0.8 ≤ y ≤ 1.2, 0 < z ≤ 1 and 0 < a ≤ 1.1).
