<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent or restrain shock from occurring if switched from D range to S range at region higher than lock-up OFF vehicle speed of the D range and lower than lock-up OFF vehicle speed of the S range. <P>SOLUTION: The lock-up OFF vehicle speed in the D range is set to the side of vehicle speed higher than the lock-up OFF vehicle speed in the S range and a control means starts variable speed of a continuously variable transmission after detecting release of a lock-up clutch when switched from the D range to the S range during running in region of the lock-up OFF vehicle speed or more in the D range and in region of the lock-up OFF vehicle speed or less in the S range.
