A desalination system 100 comprises a flash chamber 210 in fluid communication with a condenser 220. A cooled fluid 121 is used as a heat sink for condensation, in the condenser, of water vapour evaporated in the flash chamber utilising sea water 105 as a heat source for evaporation. Preferably, the condenser is arranged to condense water vapour by heat exchange with a cooling fluid, such as a water-glycol solution, thereby heating the cooling fluid. The heated cooling fluid 122 may be pumped to a gasifier 125 arranged to re-gasify liquefied natural gas (LNG) to re-cool the cooling fluid. In another aspect, a desalination method comprises the evaporation of seawater at a low pressure and high volume, using a heat sink having a lower temperature than the sea water. The resultant water vapour is forced through a demister 215 to a condenser cooled by the cooling fluid. Heat exchange with the water vapour causes heating of the cooling fluid, wherein the heated cooling fluid is then subsequently re-cooled. The amount of product condensate may be increased by adding evaporation-condensation effects.
|
