1278605 Anionic dispersion polymerization UNION CARBIDE CORP 28 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 42979/69 Heading C3P Alpha methyl styrene (and other alkenyl aromatic compounds in comparison examples) is anionically polymerized in an inert atmosphere, in a saturate ether or hydrocarbon diluent, in the presence of a dispersing agent which is a poly(vinyl alkyl ether), and in the presence of an anionic initiator-promoter system to form a dispersion of " living " polymer which may be terminated with the usual terminating agents. In the examples, alpha-methyl styrene (invention) and alpha-para-dimethylstyrene, (4- isopropenyl styrene) or styrene (comparison) are homopolymerized in hexane, heptane, or diethyl ether, using a sodium dispersion or lithium-n-butyl as initiator, tetrahydrofuran (companion) or hexamethylphosphoramide (invention) as promoter, and polyethylvinyl ether as dispersing agent and terminating the polymerizations by addition of methanol, ethanol, isopropanol or carbon dioxide.
