1280716 Aerating liquids E PROCTOR 18 Dec 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 53517/69 Heading B1C (Also in Division A5] An oxygenator particularly for blood comprises a column consisting of two parallel, vertical tubes 11, 12, amalgamated at their lower ends to form a chamber 21, and containing an elongate U-shaped steel tube 13 which passes through the walls of the tubes 11, 12 at their upper ends via sealed openings, a chamber 17 being in communication with both of the tubes 11, 12 via a duct 16 and containing a de-foaming material, preferably stainless steel wool, and leading to a reservoir 40. The bottom of the chamber 21 is covered by a cap (23) Fig. 2 (not shown) carrying on the inside a diffuser (22) being preferably a porous polythene block in communication via the cap with a tube (24), two further inlet tubes (27), (28) being provided on the cap. A deflector 33 is provided in the upstream portion of the chamber 17 to deflect a part of the blood flow upwards and comprises a plastics tube, closed at its downstream end and with two triangular portions of its wall removed narrowing towards the closed end. Two steel gauze filters 46, 47 are arranged on the upstream portion of the reservoir 40, the three chambers 50, 51, 52 into which it is thereby divided are each supplied with a tapping closable hole 53-55 for the taking of samples or introduction of medicants. The apparatus excluding the steel tube 13 is made of two integrally moulded plastics halves. In use, a gas including oxygen is introduced into the chamber 21 via the diffuser (22) and blood is introduced via the inlet 27 and is foamed by the entrant gas. The foamed liquid passes up the tubes 11, 12 and is heated by a supply of hot water which is fed through the tube 13. The blood is defoamed in the chamber 17 and passes back to the artery via an outlet 42 of the reservoir. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the two tubes 11, 12 are arranged equidistant from the chamber 17 instead of one behind the other relative to the chamber as shown. |
