Provided are a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating diabetes mellitus, containing geraniol or a pharmacologically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient, a method for preventing or treating an individual with diabetes mellitus, comprising the step of administering a pharmaceutical composition containing geraniol or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient to an individual and a method for generating an olfactory stimulus in the individual by the composition, and a method for screening a diabetes mellitus therapeutic agent, comprising the steps of: making a test material come into contact with a cell expressing an olfactory receptor; measuring expression levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secreted in the cell; and determining that the test material is a candidate material for a diabetes mellitus therapeutic agent when the test material promotes the expression of GLP-1. In addition, provided are a quasi-drug composition and a cosmetic composition for preventing or alleviating diabetes mellitus, containing geraniol. |
