1284307 Olefine sulphonates KAO SOAP CO Ltd 4 Dec 1969 [4 Dec 1968] 59233/69 Heading C2C Light-coloured long chain olefin sulphonates are prepared by contacting olefins essentially composed of straight chain mono-olefins having 8-24 carbon atoms in the molecule with 0À5-20 molar per cent, based on the olefins, of sulphur trioxide diluted with an inert gas in a pretreatment step, removing coloured matter produced in the mixture, e.g. with an adsorbent or by distillation, reacting the olefins thus treated with 1À0-1À3 moles, per mole of the olefins, of sulphur trioxide diluted with an inert gas, neutralizing the reaction product with an alkali and hydrolysing the sultones contained in the product to obtain the desired olefin sulphonates. The products may be further bleached, e.g. with NaOCl. If substantial amounts of alkenyl sulphonates or sultones are formed in the pretreatment step, they should be removed by washing or hydrolysis and washing respectively before removing the coloured matters. |
