An internal combustion engine or ICE (4, fig. 1) has an exhaust-driven supercharger 1, 2. The compressor element of the supercharger is a positive displacement adiabatic compression engine 1 for charging air entering the ICE. The compression engine 1 is driven by a positive displacement adiabatic expansion engine 2 located in the exhaust line of the ICE. Preferably the compression engine 1 and expansion engine 2 are Wankel or Wankel-style rotary engines, with power being transmitted to the compression engine via a shaft 3. The ICE may also be a Wankel or Wankel-style rotary engine. An intercooler (3, fig. 1) may be included. Bypass valves 4, 5 may be provided for bypassing the compression and expansion engines. A centrifugal separator with de-rotator may separate unused lubricating oil from the exhaust gas (see figure 3). |
