The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method to recognize characters in a natural image by using a partial shape model of characters. The present invention provides: a first preprocessing module which extracts an outline from multiple images and detects straight and curve line components from the extracted outline information; a second preprocessing module which extracts an outline from an input image and detects straight and curve line components from the extracted outline information; a partial shape study module which studies a partial shape of characters by using the detected straight and curve line components; a partial shape code book which stores a partial shape of the studied characters; a partial shape detection module which detects whether a partial shape of characters exists in the input image or not by comparing the partial shape of the studied characters with the straight and curve line components detected from the input image; and a partial combination module which finds out characters by combining partial shapes of the characters detected from the input image. |
