An angular detection apparatus and method comprises a head mountable display (HMD) with a light source or reflective marking 510, 520, 530 and an optical detector 540. One of the light source/reflective marking and the optical detector is located as part of the HMD, and the other is located at a fixed point. The light source/reflective marker is directional, and there is a further light source/reflective marker 560 that is non-directional. The difference in the detection or observation of the directional and non-directional light sources/reflective markings can determine the relative orientation 550 of the HMD and the fixed point. The directional light source/reflective marking may be an array of discrete light sources/reflective markings. There may be an angled aperture, lenticular lens arrangement or a cowling disposed near the directional light source/reflective marking to import the directional aspect. This device may be used as part of games console or a virtual reality application. |
