(I) useful as hypnotics (where X is 1-3C alkylene; R = NR1R2 (R1 and R2 are H, 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl or-alkinyl or Ph or NR1R2 is a heterocyclic ring) or NHNR3R4 (R3 and R4 are H or Ph or R3 + R4 is 2-3C alkylidene)) esp. ((I); X = CH2, R = NH iso Pr) are prepd. by condensing a benzothiazine-S-dioxide with Q-X-CO-R (where Q is halogen or a sulphonic acid residue) or a reactive deriv. of a benzothiazine-S-dioxide-N-alkylcarboxylic acid with an amine or hydrazine or by cyclising an o-haloethylbenzene sulphonyl halide with H2N-X-COR or by reacting ((I) R = NHNH2) with a ketone or aldehyde R5 = O and opt. reducing the alkylidene deriv. formed.
