The present invention provides a novel material for a liquid crystal composition that can be used for a variety of liquid crystal devices. A binaphthyl compound represented by general formula (G1) is provided. In general formula (G1), Ar^11 and Ar^12 independently represent substituted or unsubstituted arylene groups having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkylene groups having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, or substituted or unsubstituted cycloalkenylene groups having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, and m represents 1 or 2. In addition, R^12 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkylene group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms or a single bond. Also, R^13 represents a hydrogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted alkoxy group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms. Also, one of R^10 and R^11 represents a substituent represented by general formula (G2) and the other thereof represents a hydrogen atom. |
