a host interface block comprising a compression ratio calculator configured to determine whether a compression ratio of input data exceeds a predetermined compression ratio by determining whether a hit count value of the input data exceeds a reference count value, wherein the hit count value indicates a cumulative number of redundant hits from different sub-units of the input data to a collection of different hash key values; and a compression block configured to compress the input data as a consequence of the compression ratio calculator determining that the compression ratio exceeds the predetermined compression ratio.
