An inking subsystem is positioned downstream of the charging subsystem and deposits a pattern of ink on the receiver medium sheet. The charging subsystem provides a non-uniform charge on the receiver medium sheet such that the electrostatic holding force is higher in a sub-region of the receiver medium sheet than it is for other portions of the receiver medium sheet, thereby enabling the receiver medium sheet to expand as a result of ink being deposited by the inking subsystem.
