Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for processing an I/O request, and a server. The method comprises: receiving an input/output (I/O) write request from a virtual machine; writing first data requested to be written by the I/O write request into a local persistent storage region; determining a file type of a file to which the first data belongs; and if the file type of the file to which the first data belongs is a user file or a system file, writing the first data into a remote shared storage region. In the embodiments of the present invention, by determining the file type of the file to which the first data stored in the local persistent storage region belongs, the first data stored in the local persistent storage region is written into the remote shared storage region in a case in which the file to which the first data belongs is the user file or the system file, and visits to the remote shared storage region can be reduced.
