PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device, in which permeation depth of a sealing material that seals an opening can be controlled.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes: (a) a first substrate and a second substrate disposed to oppose to each other; (b) a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; (c) a sealing member 19 disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, to enclose the liquid crystal layer within a region where the first substrate and the second substrate overlap; and (d) an opening 21 interposed by the first substrate and the second substrate and connecting the inside enclosed by the sealing member and the outside of the first substrate and the second substrate. In the liquid crystal device, (e) the opening includes: two portions which are disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and each constitute a wall of the opening; and a coating film which comprises a vertical alignment film and is applied on a surface in at least a part of the first substrate and the second substrate. |
