Provided are an illumination device and a display device configured such that light sources and the end sections of light guide plates can be brought as close together as possible. An illumination device (9), used as the backlight of a display device, is provided with a plurality of light guide plates (5, 5), and light sources (8) that are close to the incident end sections (52) of the light guide plates (5) and cause light to be incident. A gap (10) exists between the light guide plates (5, 5), and the position of the incident end sections (52) is fixed within the end sections of the light guide plates (5). When the light guide plates (5, 5) expand in accordance with changes in temperature or humidity, the light guide plates (5, 5) expand so as to move closer to each other, without the incident end sections (52) moving. The light guide plates (5) do not collide with the light sources (8), and the expansion amount of the light guide plates (5, 5) is absorbed by the gap (10), thereby allowing the light sources (8) to be disposed as close as possible to the incident end sections (52) of the light guide plates (5) in the illumination device (9). |
