Provided is a liquid crystal composition having at least one or an appropriate balance of at least two characteristics from among characteristics such as a high upper limit temperature for the nematic phase, a low lower limit temperature for the nematic phase, low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy, a large positive relative permittivity anisotropy, large specific resistance, high stability to ultraviolet rays, high stability to heat and large elastic constant. Provided is an AM element having characteristics such as a short response time, large voltage retention rate, low threshold voltage, large contrast ratio and long life. A liquid crystal composition, which contains a specified compound with high stability to ultraviolet rays as the first component and which has a positive relative permittivity anisotropy, and a liquid crystal display element containing said composition. Said composition may contain a specified compound with a large positive relative permittivity anisotropy as a second component, a specified compound with a high upper limit temperature or low viscosity as a third component, and a specified compound with a polymerizable group as an additive component. |
