PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high-precision, high-speed contrast AF without driving lenses.SOLUTION: A focus detection system detects focus by acquiring pixel data representing object light intensity distribution formed by an image capturing optical system, which includes an image capturing lens, and angle information and includes: image generation means which generates reconfigured images at image reconfiguration positions from the pixel data; addition control means which updates unit pixels of the reconfigured images in accordance with a minimum value of the number of pixels added to form a unit pixel of the reconfigured images; contrast evaluation means which generates contrast evaluation values of the reconfigured images using the updated unit pixels; and focus evaluation means which detects a focal position of the object light based on the contrast evaluation values of the reconfigured images generated at different image reconfiguration positions.
