摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waveguide type optical modulator capable of realizing high modulation efficiency in an ultra high frequency range such as a microwave band in a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: A waveguide type optical modulator comprises: a substrate 2; a Mach-Zehnder optical waveguide 3; and a modulation electrode. The modulation electrode comprises a feeding part 6 and four resonance electrode parts 9, comprising electric field application lines 4a and 5a, and each of the parts are connected by feeding connection lines 7b, 8b and resonance connection lines 4b, 5b. Each of the resonance electrode parts and the four resonance electrode parts as a whole are configured as a resonator at a frequency of a modulation signal. Line lengths are adjusted such that first and third electric field application lines have an in-phase electric field and second and fourth electric field application lines have an anti-phase reverse electric field. The electric field application lines 4a and 5a are arranged to satisfy P=c/2nf, where P is a period of the arrangement, n is an equivalent refractive index of phase shift optical waveguides 3b, 3c, f is the frequency of the modulation signal, and c is a velocity of light in vacuum. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT</p>
