Anti-inflammatory phenyl-substd. pyrroles from alkylstyrylketones and alpha-aminophenylacetonitriles. Cpds. of formula (I): where R = linear - or branched alkyl, X and Y are same or different and H, linear- or branched alkyl, halogen, lower alkoxy or N-di(lower alkyl) amino but not both H, are prepd. by reacting an alkylstyrylketone (II) X-Ph-CH=CH-CO-R with an alpha-amino phenylacetonitirile deriv. (III) Y-PH-CH(NH2)-CN in basic condensation medium pref. alkali metal hydroxide or-alcoholate. (I) have anti-inflammatory activity with very low toxicity.
