In joining a tube 14 to a tube-plate 10, the tube 14 is inserted a little way into an aperture 12 in the tube plate 10 and is secured by an internal fusion weld 20. The tube 14 is expanded after insertion into an aperture 12 and welded by an inert gas shielded arc torch 16 such as is described in Specification 934,485. The outside of the tube 14 adjacent the weld is shrouded in inert gas, e.g., argon. The tubes may be removed by end-milling the welds 20 or by using internal tube cutters. The tubes may be split axially prior to removing through the apertures 12. |
