1363571 Measuring humidity electrically ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd 21 Feb 1972 [31 May 1971] 7937/72 Heading G1N A moisture leak detector includes a galvanic cell 10 disposed in a passageway 5 through which an air sample is drawn, the cell including a pair of dissimilar metal electrodes 11, 13 separated by a deliquescent electrolytic element 12 which together with electrode 11 is permeable to the air. Electrode 11 may be of stainless steel wire cloth and constitute the anode, electrode 13 of gold and constitute the cathode and the element 12 may be a sheet of porous cellulose acetate treated with zinc chloride. The external circuitry, Fig. 5 (not shown) is connected to the anode and cathode and includes an amplifier feeding a meter and a threshold circuitry, the latter operating a lamp when the output of the cell 10 increases above a predetermined level due to an increase in the humidity of the air sample drawn through passageway 5. A heater may be provided in tube 2 upstream of the sensor assembly 19 for use when the humidity is excessive, and a voltage is applied to the cell to offset the potential of the cell under ambient conditions. The electrodes may be a brass or constantan/platinum combination and the zinc chloride replaced by lithium chloride. The apparatus may be assembled in the form of a gun Fig. 1 (not shown).
|
