An airbag device 36 for installing in a vehicle bonnet (27, Figure 2), especially a front bonnet, comprises a housing 40 containing an airbag 42 and a deployable cover panel 44 coupled to housing 40 that separates from housing 40 when airbag 42 inflates. Cover panel 44 preferably includes an outer member 52 coupled to a carrier member 54, where carrier member 54 is coupled to housing 40. Outer and carrier members 52, 54 may each be polymeric, and a metallic strengthening member 56 may be coupled to carrier member 54. Cover panel 44 may be tethered to the housing using front tethers (90, Figure 5) and rear tethers (92, Figure 5) to limit displacement of cover 44 from housing 40; the tethers may be formed of flat webbing of nylon or polyester. Use of airbag device 36 may reduce injury to a pedestrian in an impact. |
