Provided are a hard coating for cutting tools and a cutting tool coated with a hard coating, the hard coating having both excellent abrasion resistance and adhesion resistance. A multilayer film in which two or more layers of a first coating layer (24) obtained from Ag and a second coating layer (26) obtained from a nitride, oxide, carbide, carbonitride, or boride of Al 1-a-b Cr a M b are alternately layered. The M in the second coating layer (26) comprises at least one kind from among Si, V and W. The atom ratio (a) in the second coating layer (26) is in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 and (b) is greater than 0 to 0.3 or less. The lamination period (d3) for the first coating layer (24) and the second coating layer (26) is in the range of 0.2 nm to 100 nm and the total film thickness (D) is in the range of 0.2 µm to 10.0 µm. As a result, it is possible to reduce the coefficient of friction and cutting resistance by including Ag in the coating and a coating of excellent lubricity and adhesion resistance as well as high hardness is obtained. |
