1499206 Capping containers SUMITOMO BAKELITE CO Ltd 24 March 1975 [28 March 1974 10 Sept 1974] 12143/75 Heading B8C A method of capping a container 1 comprises fixing a biaxially oriented film 3 on the lip of the container 1 using a cooled pressing plate 5, bending a portion of the film which extends beyond the lip, downwards using bending members 6, and heating the extending portion to shrink the same. The film applied to the container may be punched-out before being fixed to the container by the pressing plate 5 or it may be punched out in situ on the container while it is fixed by the pressing plate 5. The whole of the capped container or only the applied cap may be subjected to a secondary heating operation. The pressing plate 5 is water cooled and may be integrally formed with the bending parts 6, Fig. 17 (not shown). The film 3 or the container may have a coating of a hot melt adhesive, such as a vinyl acetate adhesive. The film applied by the present method may constitute the sole closure for a container, as shown, or it may comprise an over cap for a closed can, Fig. 12 (not shown) or for a container closed by conventional methods, Figs. 7-10 (not shown). The container may include an outwardly directed lip (2) Fig. 3 (not shown) or one or more outwardly directed projections (9) Fig. 11 (not shown), around which the film is shrunk. The punched out film may include a gripping tab (12) Fig. 16 (not shown). Various biaxially oriented films are disclosed and the film may also be a laminate. |
