A nonstoichiometric light emitting material for a light emitting device is provided to improve the stability to temperature and moisture. A nonstoichiometric light emitting material for a light emitting device is a silicate phosphor which has a tetragonal crystal structure and contains a larger amount of silicon in a crystal lattice compared with a silicate phosphor of stoichiometric crystal structure. Preferably the light emitting material contains a divalent copper in the matrix and contains europium as an activator.
