Access control at a media server

A method, system and apparatus for controlling access to a media server are provided. A browse request is received at a computing device, from a remote computing device to browse a memory structure including content files. Authentication of the remote computing device is initiated. Prior to the remote computing device being authenticated, a response is transmitted to the remote computing device indicative that the memory structure is empty of the content files, regardless of actual content of the memory structure. After the remote computing device is authenticated, a further response is transmitted to the remote computing device indicative of the actual content of the memory structure.

1. A computing device comprising:
a memory module comprising a memory structure including content files; a communication interface for communicating with a remote computing device; and, a processor enabled to:
receive, via the communication interface, a browse request from the remote computing device;initiate an authentication process of the remote computing device to determine whether access of the remote computing device to the content files is to be granted or denied;in parallel to initiating the authentication process, prior to the remote computing device being authenticated, transmit, via the communication interface, a response to the remote computing device indicative that the memory structure is empty of the content files, regardless of actual content of the memory structure, wherein the response is transmitted within a specified timeout period of the remote computing device;grant access of the remote computing device to the content files;in response to the remote computing device being granted access, transmit, via the communication interface, an indication that the memory structure has changed, wherein the indication comprises at least one of a system update ID and a container update ID;in response to the transmission of the indication, receive, via the communication interface, a further browse request from the remote computing device; andin response to receiving the further browse request, transmit, via the communication interface, a further response indicative of the actual content of the memory structure.
