The buffer contains a piston moving in a pressure vessel filled with a compressible fluid, e.g., silicone oil. The piston rod passes through two sealing rings, each of which is split at one side and arranged sot that the split widens as the pressure on it increases, and tightens the seal. The novelty is that a pressure-equalising chamber, contg. the same compressible fluid, connects the two sealing rings, which thus both respond at once to any increase of pressure in the main vessel. A non-return valve pref. conveys any excess fluid from the pressure-equalising chamber back into the main vessel.
