The compact static converter has its thyristors mounted in groups on different levels. Each such group forms a single unit cooled by its own coolant feed system. Each unit (3, 5) is enclosed by an insulating casing (2). The insulating casings are mounted one above the other so that a central duct (1) is formed by the rectangular holes through their middles (or alternatively they may be attached to a free-standing central duct). The coolant passes along the duct. Each casing has a hole linking it to the duct.
