Disclosed is a method of making a sucrose solution, the method comprising: irradiating crystalline sucrose. wherein the total dose of radiation is from 30 Mrad to 70 Mrad; and wherein irradiating is performed at a dose rate greater than 0.15 Mrad per second combining the irradiated sucrose with water under conditions that allow the sucrose to dissolve; thereby making a sucrose solution.
