Oral formulations and lipophilic salts of methylnaltrexone

Disclosed is a salt of a compound of formula (I) where the anion A- is an amphiphilic pharmaceutically acceptable excipient. Also disclosed are compositions comprising methylnaltrexone or a salt thereof, and compositions and formulations thereof, for oral administration. The compounds and compositions are suitable for reducing side effects of opioid therapy.
