An apparatus for joining plywood core strips comprises a first set of conveyor belts (1) for feeding the wood strips to be jointed, a second set of conveyor belts (7) moving at a slower speed than the belts (1) and pressure elements (22, 24), effective to press the wood strips against the conveyor belts (1 and 7). Each pressure element includes a rod (22, 24) having its front end (22f, 24f) bent upwardly and pivotally supported by the machine frame (23, 25) through a linkage (22a, 22b, 24a, 24b), each rod (22, 24) being urged against the underlying conveyor belt (1, 7) by a pneumatic cylinder (22c, 24c). Alignment means (26, 26') including stop pawls (26') and sensors (34) controlling the actuation of the stop pawls (26') are provided to align the strips perpendicular to the feeding direction. Adhesive coated threads (46) fed from rolls (45, 50) are applied across and on both sides of abutted edges of adjacent wood strips, the adhesive coating being softened either by ultrasonic sonotrodes (47, 54) or electrical resistance heating devices.
