Starter motor for IC engine - has starting pinion on motor shaft which is engaged with and disengaged from engine by inertia forces

The starter consists of a fixed pinion (2) sliding on a motor shaft (4). The free end of the shaft is threaded (5) and is screwed into a threaded collar (6) which has peripheral splines (7) which engage with internal splines (8) on the pinion body (3). When the starter motor is energised the shaft revolves and the screwed collar (6) moves along the shaft compressing the spring (9) until it butts up against the pinion body thus engaging the pinion with the engine starter ring. The inertia of the engine on starting returns the pinion to its original position assisted by the weaker spring (14).
