<p>A bill payment system 10 comprises a repository for managing issuance of a bill and subsequent status of a bill, the repository 13 storing details and associated bank or account information 14, 15 of a payer 12 and a payee 11 and being able to communicate with the payer and the respective banks of the payer and payee. Bill details are communicated to the repository including identification of the payer and payee and the amount payable, the system generating instruction for payment from the payer and communicating this to the respective banks. The instruction may be generated automatically on receipt of the bill or may require authorisation from the payer e.g. by entering a password or PIN. Thus a central system provides payment in relation to bills and the customer or payer does not need to provide payment details to separate companies. The status of the bill may be updated in real time and communicated to the payer and/or payee. A full audit trail may be recorded and stored. The payer and payee devices used to access the system may be pre-registered and password protected to reduce the risk of fraud.</p> |
