Apparatus for liquid purification by countercurrent liquid-solid contact has stacked lower filtering and upper-regeneration columns, the liquid passing upwardly through the filter bed. The regeneration column lower end opens into the filtering column and supplied filtering material sufficient to compensate for reduction in the amount in the filtering column on withdrawal of an amount from the bottom for delivery to the regeneration column. An exhaust pipe extends from a port in the regeneration column and has a liquid seal spaced vertically a set distance below the port so that suspended solids are discharged from the regeneration column.
