A heating system control method includes: obtaining an output modulation instruction from a power supply source (S101); determining whether the state of the heat pump in a given period including an output modulation period satisfies a first condition indicating that switching the heat pump to the defrost mode is required (S102); and controlling the mode of operation of the heat pump (S103). In the controlling, when the state of the heat pump satisfies the first condition, the heat pump is switched to the defrost mode before a start time of the output modulation period, and when the state of the heat pump does not satisfy the first condition, the heat pump is caused to operate in the heating mode, without switching the heat pump to the defrost mode before the start time of the output modulation period.
