The invention relates to P,P,P',P'-tetrachloro- m-phenylenediphosphane <IMAGE> and to the process for the preparation of P,P,P',P'-tetrachloro- m-phenylenediphosphane by reacting a) m-bromophenyldichlorophosphane (1) with dimethylamine, preferably in diethyl ether, to give m-bromophenyl- bis(dimethylamino)phosphane, b) m-bromophenyl-bis-(dimethylamino)phosphane, preferably with butyllithium in the form of a solution in ether, to give m-lithiumphenyl-bis-(dimethylamino)phosphane, c) m-lithiumphenyl-bis(dimethylamino)phosphane with bis(dimethylamino)chlorophosphane to give P,P,P',P'-tetrakis- (dimethylamino)-m-phenylenediphosphane, preferably by dropwise addition of a solution of bis(dimethylamino)- chlorophosphane in ether to a solution of m-lithium-phenylbis(dimethylamino)phosphane in ether, and d) P,P,P',P'-tetrakis-(dimethylamino)-m-phenylenediphosphane with hydrogen chloride to give P,P,P',P'-tetrachloro- m-phenylenediphosphane, preferably by introducing HCl gas into a solution of P,P,P',P'-tetrakis(dimethylamino)-m-phenylenediphosphane in ether. The reactions are carried out under the protective gas atmosphere of an inert gas, preferably argon, and with the exclusion of moisture. The compound represents a valuable novel intermediate for the synthesis of active substances, in particular pesticides and phosphinoborines.
