A transfer case control system comprises a transfer case control module (TCCM) 2 which accesses vehicle operating parameter(s) to determine the current status of vehicle systems and/or dynamic operating parameters of a vehicle 5. The TCCM 2 accesses vehicle speed data and modifies a change identification signal to indicate whether a range change is static or dynamic. If the transfer case 3 does not include a synchronizer, the TCCM 2 determines that the range change is not viable if the vehicle 5 is moving and informs, via control module 33, a driver that a requested range change, e.g. from low to high or vice versa, is not possible, optionally also indicating that the vehicle 5 should be brought to rest. If the transfer case 3 comprises a synchronizer but the TCCM 2 determines that the vehicle speed is above a predefined threshold, the control module 33 informs the driver that a requested range change is not possible, optionally also indicating that the vehicle 5 should be slowed. |
