Metal-organic framework compounds and their method of manufacture

A method of preparing a metal-organic framework compound comprises the steps of contacting a solid, particulate, inorganic metal compound with an organic ligand compound in the presence of a liquid which is not a solvent for said inorganic metal compound and then separating a product metal-organic framework from the liquid and drying said product metal-organic framework compound. Compounds made by this method, in particular those comprising copper or iron and ligands derived from benzenetricarboxylic acid are disclosed, having a surface area as measured by argon absorption and BET methods of at least 1200m2/g.
