Disclosed are a mobile terminal which stores a smart key and is capable of controlling an electronic appliance embedded in a vehicle and a method for controlling the same. A mobile terminal according to an embodiment of the present invention transmits terminal identification to an external electronic appliance, activates a specific application to display a user interface for inputting certification information when a first control signal is received from the external electronic appliance, receives the certification information input through the user interface, and generates a second control signal according to a result of processing the certification information to transmit the second control signal to the external electronic appliance.
