The present invention relates to an inter prediction method and a motion compensation method. According to the present invention, disclosed is an inter prediction method which performs inter prediction as to a current picture by using a long-term reference picture stored in a decoded picture buffer (DPB), and determines a motion vector and residual data of a current picture generated by inter prediction, and determines least significant bits (LSB) information as a long-term reference index indicating a long-term reference picture, by dividing picture order count (POC) information of the long-term reference picture into most significant bits (MSB) information and LSB information.
