The present invention relates to a manufacturing method for dimethylolbutyraldehyde capable of obtaining dimethylolbutyraldehyde useful for manufacturing trimethylol propane by using a mixture of ethylacrolein and n-butyraldehyde as a starting material. The manufacturing method for dimethylolbutyraldehyde comprises a condensation step of making the mixture of ethylacrolein and n-butyraldehyde as the starting material react with formaldehyde under the presence of a basic compound as a catalyst as seen in reaction formula 1.
