Plant carrying devices with a cylindrically formed wrapper 2a, which surrounds a body of filling material and possibly a seed. The filling material (3) contains artificially produced foam particles or consists of the latter. Also described is a method for producing such devices by continuously supplying at 21 a wrapping material strip 2, by continuously supplying filling material from 11 and possibly seeds from 16 to the wrapping material strip. The filling material is removed from a supply and its individual particles are spread out continuously to form a thin layer, the height of which is low in comparison to the width at right angles to the conveying direction. The filling material of the fleece is accumulated at 14 to form a narrow filling material rod, which is delivered at right angles to the conveying direction of the fleece and in the direction of its own longitudinal axis, wrapped at 24 by the wrapping material strip and thus made to form a continuous tubular plant carrying device, from which the plant carrying devices are cut off at 28. Apparatus for carrying out this method is also described.
