PURPOSE: A portable terminal combining an external device equipped with a docking interface unit and an operation method thereof are provided to supply an optimal use environment by docking a portable terminal to an external device. CONSTITUTION: If a docking detection signal is received through a docking interface(170), a controlling unit(180) switches an operation mode of a portable terminal into a docking connection mode. The controlling unit transmits image data to the external device through the docking interface in order to display the image through an image output device of the external device.
