A method and apparatus for processing an audio signal to downmix and convert channel of multichannel audio signals are provided. The method for processing an audio signal includes: determining a first downmix condition and a second downmix condition based on input channel information and output channel information; downmixing an input audio signal into a downmix audio signal based on the first downmix condition; and downmixing the downmix audio signal into an output audio signal based on the second downmix condition.
