<p>PURPOSE: An external device and a method for switching a wake-up mode of a portable terminal docked to the device are provided to enable the external device and the portable terminal to switch a sleep mode to a wake-up mode docked to each other. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal in a sleep mode senses a wake-up event(S110). When the wake-up event is sensed, the portable terminal is waken up(S120). An external device senses a predetermined electric signal generated by the portable terminal(S140). The external device in the sleep mode is waken up by the predetermined electric signal(S125).
