A fuel cell stack assembly comprises a plurality of fuel cells in a stack (1102), the stack (1102) defining a first end face (1110) and a second end face (1112) that are parallel and opposing one another, and a compression member (1150, 1152) at each opposing end face of the stack (1102), each compression member (1150, 1152) having a proximal portion (1154, 1158) and a distal portion (1156, 1160). Each compression member (1150, 1152) defines an engagement surface (1166) for receiving a compression force and a compression surface (1168) adjacent to and in compressive relationship with a respective one of the first and second end faces (1110, 1112). The fuel cell stack assembly also comprises a retaining member (1100) attached to the first and second compression members (1150, 1152) to thereby apply the compression force and maintain the fuel cells in the stack (1102) under compression. At least one of the compression members (1150, 1152) is shaped such that the compression force applied only to the proximal portion (1154, 1158) of the engagement surface is distributed uniformly across the compression surface (1168) in both the proximal (1154, 1158) and distal portions (1156, 1160). |
